People seem to be in two camps when it comes to making their beds in the morning.
Making my bed in the morning is a prerequisite to the start of my day. I literally cannot function or concentrate until my sheets are smoothed out, my pillows plumped and my decorative but pointless cushions are arranged – and it seems I’m on to something.
Freshening up your sheets in the morning isn’t just for aesthetics; it actually goes a long way to boost your productivity.
According to Aimee Bernstein, a psychotherapist and author of Stress Less Achieve More: “Being productive requires both an energy flow and a structure. Without an energy flow, you won’t have the motivation or creativity you need and without structure, you lack organisation and may spin your wheels and accomplish very little.”
She therefore recommends making your bed every morning as a ritual to kick your day off with some much-needed structure that you can build on throughout the day to keep your productivity levels sky-high.
“Over time, this simple accomplishment develops a muscle for completion and organisation, which leads to a sense of wellbeing and other accomplishments,” she told Martha Stewart.
Dreams sleep expert, Sammy Margo, agrees – and says as well as boosting your productivity, making your bed can also enhance your sleep.
“As a child, my mum used to nag me to make my bed and as an adult and a sleep expert, it makes so much sense,” she explained.
“Research has shown that making your bed has been shown to improve your sleep. And those who did make their bed on most days had better sleep than those who rarely or never make their beds. Making your bed first thing sets you up for the day. It sets a tone of achievement, so even though it’s a small activity, it can mean a great deal, especially when you get into a neatly made bed at night.”
In the words of U.S. Navy Admiral, William H. McCraven: “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. Making your bed will reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right.”
