10 Glorious Celebrity Fashion Moments That Show The Enduring Power Of Chanel

When it comes to sartorial conundrums, they don’t get more tricky than one recently faced by Olivia Rodrigo: what to wear to meet the President at the White House? The 18-year-old superstar musician found the answer in a Chanel twinset – a vintage one at that. First seen in a 1995 collection, Rodrigo’s Chanel suit was born before her.

Olivia isn’t the only famous face that understands the timeless allure of Chanel. More and more A-listers are looking to vintage gowns for events, such as the Oscars and the Met Gala, and Chanel often comes up trumps with the ultimate throwback offering.

The Olsen twins often look to Chanel for their Met Gala looks, choosing pieces from their well-stocked personal archive. When Rihanna wears vintage Chanel, she breathes new life into decades-old pieces with contemporary accessories, while Chanel ambassadors Keira Knightley and Margot Robbie tend to keep it more classic and stay true to the house vision.

Here, 10 vintage Chanel looks that deserve a second look.

Margot Robbie
At the 2020 Academy Awards, British Vogue cover star Margot Robbie arrived wearing a modified dress from the spring/summer 1994 couture collection. “We discovered this ’90s couture gown in Chanel’s archive back in December 2019. It’s very similar to the short dress that Claudia Schiffer wore on Karl Lagerfeld’s spring/summer 1994 couture runway, but it was made for a client, so it’s truly unique,” Robbie’s stylist told Vogue at the time.

Penélope Cruz
Penélope Cruz arrived at the Oscars in 2020 wearing an A-line dress with a camellia detail, first worn by Carla Bruni on the spring/summer 1995 couture catwalk.

Kristen Stewart
A contemporary take on “vintage”, Kirsten Stewart wore a spring/summer 2013 couture gown during the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

The modern multi-hyphenate was photographed wearing a pink and baby blue tweed coat from the autumn/winter 1996 collection with a Maisie Wilen terrycloth tracksuit in March 2021.

Lily-Rose Depp
To walk the steps of the Met Gala in 2017, long-time Chanel loyalist Lily-Rose Depp wore a fuchsia gown with metallic flower detail from the spring/summer 2000 couture collection.

Two years later, Lily-Rose looked to the spring/summer 1992 collection for her 2019 Met Gala ensemble.

Keira Knightley
The Chanel ambassador has often looked to past collections for red-carpet moments. Revisiting this frothy gown from the spring/summer 2005 couture collection in 2018 is one of Knightley’s most memorable Chanel looks.

Kylie Jenner
Vintage Chanel doesn’t always have to be a couture gown or a tweed suit. In July 2019, Jenner was photographed wearing the same bikini Naomi Campbell wore on the catwalk for the spring/summer 1994 collection, three years before Kylie was born.

Olivia Rodrigo
To meet with President Joe Biden at the White House, 18-year-old pop superstar Olivia wore a sweet pink Chanel twinset from 1995 with sky-high Giuseppe Zanotti heels and a dainty Amina Muaddi bag. A sweet nod to First Lady-fashion if ever.

Twenty years after it debuted at Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna wore this zesty orange twinset for an American TV appearance. Little photo evidence of the suit exists from the original show, but you can see the likeness to the ones that came before it or watch it strut the catwalk in the first 30 seconds of the archive footage here.
