A month after revealing that she was pregnant with fiancé Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry has confirmed the sex of her first baby. “It’s a girl,” she simply captioned a heart emoji-filled Instagram post of Bloom, his face smeared with pink icing – presumably from a cake at a gender reveal party. As for the location tag? Perry chose “Girls Run The World”, a nod to Beyoncé’s 2011 hit.
Katy Perry originally debuted her growing bump in the video for her new single, “Never Worn White”. She is due to give birth in the summer. “omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore,” Perry tweeted shortly after her video dropped on 5 March. “or carry around a big purse lol.”
One scene in the video, which ends with Perry cradling her bump in a sheer dress, sees the singer dressed in a gown and matching headdress fashioned from a mountain of flowers. It conjures memories of Beyoncé’s infamous 2017 pregnancy reveal: a carefully orchestrated photograph of the superstar posing in a veil against a lush floral backdrop that became the most liked Instagram post of all time (a record that has since been broken by Kylie Jenner… and an egg).
Perry’s fans were also quick to point out the similarities between her look in the video and the folk horror film Midsommar, in which Florence Pugh memorably wore an elaborate floral costume as a hysterical May queen on mushrooms. Perry seems to approve of the comparison – she’s been sharing fans’ memes on her Instagram Stories.
The star’s new single, and the accompanying video, appear to have been inspired by her romance with actor Bloom, who proposed on Valentine’s Day with a flower-shaped ring comprised of a pink oval diamond surrounded by eight white diamond “petals”. “See us in 60 years with a full family tree,” she sings on the track. They’ve made a start on it already.
