The Duchess of Cambridge wore one of Princess Diana’s favorite jeweled pieces, the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, last night for the Queen’s winter party at Buckingham Palace. Kate Middleton was seen sporting the sparkly headpiece as she and her husband, Prince William, arrived at the annual diplomatic reception yesterday evening.
Though her full outfit wasn’t photographed, she appears to have worn a beaded white dress, diamond necklace and drop pearl earrings to accompany her late mother-in-law’s precious jewels.
She did the same in December 2015 as well. It looks like the tiara has become Middleton’s wardrobe staple for attending the Queen’s annual winter banquet.
Though the tiara was one of Diana’s favorites, it was actually made for Queen Mary in 1914 by Garrard, jeweler to the British royal family. (It’s also sometimes referred to as Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot.) The piece is inspired by a tiara owned by the monarch’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse, who was also the Duchess of Cambridge. After Queen Mary died in 1953, the tiara was passed down to Queen Elizabeth II, then to Princess Diana, and now to the Duchess of Cambridge.
With Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle quickly approaching, we wonder if the duchess-to-be will have the chance to wear any of Princess Di’s tiaras in her new, royal life. She’s already wearing two of her diamonds on her engagement ring.
