24/02/2021

It’s an especially good time to be a Tina Turner fan. After being recently nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the legendary singer will also be featured in an HBO documentary, due for release next month.

TINA, which promises to deliver a “revealing and intimate look” at Turner’s life and career will premiere Saturday, March 27, at 8 p.m. ET on HBO. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max. Below, see what else to know.

Footage will span six decades of Turner’s career.

According to the network, the film will follow Turner’s rise to fame, her personal and career struggles, and her earning icon status in the ’80s and beyond. It will feature interviews with the artist herself, filmed at her home in Switzerland, appearances from people close to her, and rare archival footage spanning 60 years. Others providing on-screen commentary include Angela Bassett; Oprah Winfrey; I, Tina co-author Kurt Loder; playwright Katori Hall, who wrote the musical about Turner’s life; and Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach.

The film comes from the same production company behind Whitney.

TINA comes from Oscar-winning directors Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin (who made the acclaimed 2011 sports doc Undefeated) and the production company Lightbox, from producers Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn, which was behind the authorized 2018 Whitney Houston documentary Whitney. Emmy-nominated producer Diane Becker is also behind the film.

The doc will acknowledge Turner as a survivor.

In addition to documenting Turner’s stardom, the feature will also acknowledge the singer’s journey as a survivor of abuse. In 1981, she famously opened up to People magazine about the turmoil and trauma she endured while married to Ike Turner, her former husband and musical partner, whom she had divorced five years prior. “The article would be the first of many profiles that would cement Tina’s image as a survivor, helping to fuel the story of her extraordinary yet improbable career comeback,” according to a statement from HBO.

The documentary will conclude with Turner taking a bow onstage during opening night of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, the stage production about her life.
