Bobbi Brown’s 5 most important beauty tips

Bobbi Brown has always been comfortable going against the grain. Her illustrious career began in the 1980s when, as an emerging make-up artist, she eschewed the paintbox brights and maximalist impact of the time to offer a more muted, restrained look. With the sepia shades of the 1990s just around the corner, she was clearly onto something.

It wasn’t until 1995 that Brown truly became a household name. Her eponymous brand encapsulated the way women wanted to look at the time: like themselves, only brighter.

Now, five years after stepping down from her first company, Brown is back with Jones Road: a skincare and make-up line that chimes with today’s low-key approach to beauty.

The first thing you’ll notice is the distinct lack of colour: of course, no one expects retina-searing shades or full-coverage formulas from the queen of neutrals, but Jones Road feels distinctly pared-back – and that was always the plan.

“I created my original brand in the ’90s – things are different today,” said Brown. “Women shop differently; there is a new definition of what beauty is. Imperfect is beautiful, and Jones Road celebrates that. It’s the ultimate no-make-up make-up.”

In the spirit of enhancing your natural skin, the Miracle Balm is a low-pigment, high-gloss balm designed to be swiped with fingers anywhere you fancy. It looks sublime on the high points of the cheeks, and smoothed over lips. The Mascara is ultra-black yet light and fluffy, while the Face Pencil is ready to replace your foundation, blending redness and spots into the background without masking your skin. Long-wear eye and brow pencils, eyeshadow singles and a non-sticky lip gloss round out your daily kit, while the Sparkle Wash liquid eyeshadow takes things quickly into party territory.

Here, Brown reveals her most valuable advice for anyone looking to embrace make-up the modern way.

“Learn to love yourself before a full face of foundation, then use make-up to enhance some features. I like to use a little of the Miracle Balm as a sheer tint over cheeks, and then use the Face Pencils just to even out any areas, not cover my entire face.”

“A fuller, more naturally shaped eyebrow makes such a difference – it frames your face. Make sure you use the tip of your pencil in light upward strokes, as this can help define the shape, and fill in and thicken where needed. Then use a spoolie to brush up and diffuse the colour you’ve added for a more natural look.”

“I love an uber-black mascara, which is hard to find – so many are not black enough in my opinion. We created Jones Road’s The Mascara with a curved wand to make sure it captures the inner corner baby lashes and also the outer lashes, as this helps to create that fanned-out look, which is my preference. If you are on the go and don’t have an eyelash curler, after applying use your index finger to push your lashes upward. Hold for a moment and release.”

“Always hydrate yourself inside and out. Make sure you are drinking enough water and eating lots of healthy fats. Before make-up, always always apply moisturiser – however obvious that sounds! Super-hydrated skin is key to a good base.”

“As you would with fashion, learn your personal style – try different things and find a style that makes you feel comfortable. My favourite is a beauty look that makes me look fresh and well rested”.
