The Duchess of Sussex addresses tabloid stories about her life

20/11/2019

The Duchess of Sussex is taking action against various tabloid stories concerning her relationship with her father, baby shower and Frogmore Cottage renovations – and now she’s personally addressed the false reports.

According to new court documents filed by her legal team, in her case against Associated Newspapers, a ‘private and confidential’ letter from the royal to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, was written at a “time of great personal anguish and distress”.

In the papers, which were filed on 11 November, the duchess’ lawyers claim the letter was “obviously private correspondence” which detailed “her intimate thoughts and feelings about her father’s health and her relationship with him at the time”.

Her lawyers also point out that the publications “chose to deliberately omit or suppress” other parts of the letter, which means they “intentionally distorted or manipulated” the context.

“The claimant intended the detailed contents of the letter to be private, and certainly did not expect them to be published to the world at large by a national newspaper, and without any warning,” the lawyers state.

Despite the royal having no warning that the letter would be published, sections of it were published in February in the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline.

Regarding the duchess’ baby shower, her legal representatives state that suggestions that her mother Doria Ragland wasn’t invited are “untrue and offensive” to Meghan, according to People.

“The claimant’s mother was of course invited, and the claimant also offered to buy her airline tickets,” her lawyers explain. “However, her mother was unable to attend due to work commitments.”

Meghan’s lawyers also address the false reports that her home Frogmore Cottage as a “guest wing” for her mother to stay in.
