Italy has always been considered a magical place, mainly due to its marvellous cities. You can travel anytime to Italy. Whether it is to a beach destination, skiing, sightseeing, shopping, wine tasting, etc., the places you will visit will become your most precious memories.
As of recently, one of the most coveted places to spend holidays in Italy is the Amalfi Coast. If you love traveling, exploring new places, tasting delicious local food, taking the most beautiful pictures surrounded by a Mediterranean vibe, the Amalfi coast is your destination.
When speaking of the Amalfi Coast, most people only think about Positano, but you will be so surprised to find out that there are other picturesque towns you can explore. That is why we have created an interesting guide, so you can transform your holidays into an unforgettable experience.
You can reach the Amalfi Coast through Naples or Sorrento either by bus, train, or car.
Sorrento is the starting point, since it is easily accessible. While staying in Sorrento, you can visit both Naples and Pompeii in a day. Most people tend to stay in Sorrento, if they do not want to spend too much and explore new places every day. Sorrento can be used as a base for exploring the rest of the coast and to get to the islands of Capri and Ischia.
One of the most amazing hotels to stay in Sorrento is Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. This place will make you feel like you are part of a movie scene, enjoying life and relaxing while drinking Aperol Spritz in the terrace, with a breathtaking view of the sea. You can have a romantic dinner with your partner at the Michelin starred restaurant Il Buco.
You can take a walk in the Old Town and shop for some souvenirs. If you are an ice cream lover, then you have to go to Gelateria Davide, dating back to 1957.
This little town surrounded by pastel-colored houses is the most famous destination and is also quite romantic. It is the perfect place to be with your partner and enjoy “La Dolce Vita”. If you want to live it as if it were a movie, get a vespa scooter and be amazed by everything you will see.
Le Sirenuse is the best hotel in town and we are pretty sure you will know what we are talking about when you see it for yourself. Everywhere you go is perfect for taking pictures. Enjoy your stay in Positano and have that glass of rosé while staying in a terrace, witnessing the romantic sunset.
The most famous beach in Positano is Spiaggia Grande. During the high season you’ll have to book a sun lounger in advance or you can lay out a towel in the free beach area. You can also go to Spiaggia del Fornillo, which has several summer beach bars where you can enjoy a cocktail. If you want to do some sightseeing while in Positano, you can visit Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Murat and if you are an art lover you can visit the Franco Senesi gallery.
If you want to have dinner in a balcony, as the sun is almost disappearing, leaving the nightlights surround the cliff town, you can go at Next2 Bar and enjoy your food.
Praiano town is located between Positano and Amalfi, so this is your short destination before heading to Amalfi. If you want to try some delicious sea food along the bay, go at Il Pirata. It won’t fail you. If you can’t stay away from the shops, you can shop for ceramics at Lizart Ceramiche.
If you want to be amazed from the narrow streets of beautiful Amalfi Town, get a Vespa scooter and go see the Duomo di Sant’Andrea, the main attraction in town. A bit further you will have the opportunity to do some shopping in ceramics, leather goods, coral jewellery, etc.
Hotel Santa Caterina is the perfect accommodation for you. If you are on a low budget, you can stay at a hostel or a low-priced hotel. Ristorante Marina Grande is the best place for traditional and simple meals and it offers an amazing view of the Mediterranean. But if you want to eat at a Michelin starred restaurant, we suggest Ristorante La Caravella which offers regional dishes with a modern twist. For a low-key dining you can visit Il Teatro, a small trattoria, somehow hidden in the maze-like backstreets of the city centre.
Marina Grande is the location for you to lay on the sand or take a dip in the beautiful sea.
Ravello is a resort town, 365 meters above Tyrrhenian Sea. That is the reason why this little town is not so overcrowded with tourists, like Positano. If you wish to relax and spend some days doing nothing but enjoying the sun and the sea, this little town is perfect for you. You can either stay at Palazzo Avino or at the Belmond Hotel Caruso. If you visit this place from July to September you will have the possibility to attend Ravello Festival at Villa Rufolo. The festival is all about classical music, inspired by Richard Wagner, who found inspiration for his compositions in Ravello. While staying in Ravello you can go dining at L’Antica Cartiera for a delicious sea food, while hearing the sound of the sea, or you can go at Babel Wine Bar where all the locals go.
Other beautiful little Towns of the Amalfi Coast
Besides the beautiful little towns of the Amalfi Coast, you also have the chance to visit Capri, since it is quite near. Capri is as breathtaking as Positano. Everything that belongs to this town will become a precious memory for you: the little beaches, the narrow streets, the turquoise water. In Capri it seems like the old embraces the new. What was Elizabeth Taylor’s and Brigitte Bardot’s top destination in the 60s, is now the most coveted destination for many people. There is so much to do and see in Capri, but we suggest talking a walk and get lost. That is the only way you can fully experience the narrow streets. Visiting Villa San Michele and the Gardens of Augustus is a must. The small and beautiful garden will give you the opportunity to have a look at the Faraglioni.
The only way to reach Capri is, obviously, by sea. Ferries depart from Naples and Sorrento. During the summer months, there are also ferry routes departing from Positano, Salerno, and Ischia. For most of the year, vehicles are prohibited from embarking for the island, with the exception of residents. That said, a car is of little use on Capri, so it’s always better to leave it on the mainland.
If you want to taste some delicious pizza, you can head to Aumm Aumm or Verginiello in Capri town. You should also think about dessert, especially torta caprese, a cake made with almonds and chocolate. We suggest the most famous place, Pasticceria Ferraro.
If you want to stay in a luxurious hotel, we recommend Caesar Augustus Hotel, where you will enjoy your stay and have an amazing view from the balcony. But you can also stay at other low priced hotels like Hotel Carmencita or Mari Palatium Hotel Capri.
The island of Ischia is not that famous, but it certainly became an attraction after reading Elena Ferrante’s novels that gave us a full picture of the island. It certainly made many people book their holidays in Naples and the surrounding towns, including this little island. Ischia is not that popular, but it doesn’t mean that there is nothing there for the tourist. You can have a day trip to Ischia from Naples or Sorrento and you can enjoy your time at the island’s thermal hot springs.
You will never have enough time to visit Italy’s most beautiful attractions. The country makes you eager to come back again and again and explore new places and discover its hidden gems. Italy will always remain special and a unique destination.
