I like to consider myself as a movie critic and I can spend hours and hours analyzing the story of a movie and its characters. For sure I was not surprised from the Oscar’s nominations, because it was so obvious for me who was going to be nominated this year for Best Picture or Best Director. Now that Valentine’s Day is almost here, I began to remember the movies I usually consider to be romantic or the opposite of it, like movies who destroy romanticism. One of my favorite quotes from Arthur Rimbaud says:
Romanticism has never been properly judged. Who was there to judge it? The critics!
Moving on with Valentine’s Day there are plenty of movies for the dreamers like me who believe that one day the soulmate will knock on the door. Well… not on the door exactly, but he is there somewhere… I am not into the typical Valentine’s Day movies. But, I have a list of my favorites and I would totally suggest you check them out. Probably you have seen them, but who knows, there might be someone out there who might enjoy watching them for the first time.
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
When I first saw this movie, it completely shocked me. The director beautifully captured the situation between a couple who decided to erase their memory and became totally strangers to each other. I was completely fascinated watching Jim Carrey in a formal role I might say. The movie has many inspiring quotes that you somehow can relate to, like: “We met at the wrong time. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway. Maybe one day, years from now, we’ll meet in a coffee shop in a far away city somewhere and we could give it another shot.
2. Sing Street
Love is such a beautiful feeling, especially when it is your first love. This movie tells the story of a young boy who fell in love with an older girl and decided to create a music band just to impress her. The songs in this movie are totally great.
3. La La Land
There are many reasons why I love this movie, but the most important one is the fact that this movie is all about those who dream, or better say the fools who dream. There are many obstacles in life and probably you will be forced to do things that you do not want to do, but dreaming and determination are the ones that will always guide you, and one day you will achieve it all, though sometimes you have to sacrifice a few things like the love Sebastian and Mia had for one anoother in the movie.
4. About time
Just imagine how great it would be having the power to go back in time and change particular situations in your life. This movie shows what a guy is willing to do just to get to know the girl he randomly met. Well, he even became a crazy fan of Kate Moss just to impress her.
5. Pride and Prejudice
Dear Jane Austen,
Thank you for all the romances you have written.
A helpless romantic person.
6. Bridget Jones’s Diary
If you are not in a good mood, because you totally hate the Valentine’s Day drama, watching Bridget Jones’s Diary will totally get you out of your bad mood.
7. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
The movie tells the story of Benjamin Button, who starts aging backwards. Though, the movie is focused on the life of Benjamin and how he starts changing day by day, there is a love story between the main character and Daisy, the little girl he met at the place he used to live. Two different people start to have feelings for each other and they try to do everything to make their relationship work despite the unusual circumstances.
8. Slumdog Millionaire
How far are you willing to go just to win the girl of your dreams? This movie tells you all about it.
