The Best Movies and TV Shows Coming in January 2022 on Netflix

25/12/2021

It’s the end of yet another very long year, and yet it feels like just the beginning. Lucky for you, Netflix is stocking up on some tried and true films in January 2022 while going fairly light on original content, giving all of us a chance to ease into the next chapter. Big Fish and Stand By Me may provide unexpected comforts, while Escaping the NXIVM Cult: A Mother’s Fight to Save Her Daughter; Girl, Interrupted; and Taxi Driver could satiate a forever-growing cultural appetite for the dark and sinister.

There will also be fresh releases for those in need of immediate thrills. If this past year has dragged you deeper into the throes of Tik Tok, Netflix’s new reality series Hype House, about the cabals of young social media stars living in LA mansions, will likely prove irresistible. As a palate cleanser, there’s Getting Curious, an educational program of sorts coming from Queer Eye fan favorite Jonathan Van Ness. And finally, if you were clamoring for an unofficial follow-up to the alternately baffling and compelling The Woman In the Window, look no further than, I’m not kidding, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window… starring Kristen Bell as, uh, that Woman.

Here’s what else is in store on Netflix at the start of 2022:

John Huston’s film adaptation of the hit musical is the best one there is. It’s filled to the brim with all-you’ve-got performances from showbiz greats, including Carol Burnett as the bitter and sleazy Miss Hannigan; Albert Finney as the gruff, bald, and rich Daddy Warbucks; Bernadette Peters and Tim Curry as creepy adoptive parents with an agenda; Gilmore Girls legend Edward Hermann as President Franklin Roosevelt; and Ann Reinking (All That Jazz) as the kindly motherlike figure to Aileen Quinn’s adorable and mischievous Annie.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) (January 1)

David Fincher’s English-language feature film remake of the hit Swedish television series—adapted from Stieg Larsson’s noirish novels—stars Rooney Mara as the intense, traumatized computer hacker genius Lisbeth Salander. Daniel Craig takes the role of her handler, of sorts, and journalist collaborator Mikael Blomkvist. Come for the star-studded cast, topped off by Robin Wright and Christopher Plummer. Stay for Steven Zaillan’s crisp and shadowy screenplay, paired perfectly with a careening score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Phantom Thread (January 16)

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis in his allegedly final performance as uppity English fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock and Vicky Krieps (Bergman Island, Old) as his passionate but increasingly aggrieved beloved with a mysterious past, Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Licorice Pizza, There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights) mid-century period drama will be the unexpected romantic comedy ride of your life. The Oscar-nominated score, by Anderson’s frequent collaborator, composer and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog, Spencer), is at turns sharp and swooning, coupling perfectly with Woodcock’s harsh and hilarious countenance.

The wildly popular show about a midwestern white family caught up in the cartel world returns for the first part of its final season. More than pulling her weight alongside Jason Bateman and Laura Linney is Julia Garner, playing the pair’s criminal partner, Ruth. You’ll get to see more of her on Netflix in Shonda Rhimes’ upcoming true crime series about international scam artist Anna Delvey.
