MAC Cosmetics still wants to give Selena superfans the collection they’ve been waiting for, even during uncertain times.
Per WWD, the cosmetics company has confirmed that even amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis affecting the globe, the brand is moving forward with the April 21 release of its second collection honoring late Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla. MAC launched its original run of Selena-inspired products—which sold out immediately upon initial release—back in 2016 after a fan-initiated online petition inspired the collection’s creation. Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, partnered with MAC for both collections to ensure the selected shades and product design authentically reflect her sister’s legacy.
“We had to adjust our plans and postpone any [events] we had planned. The only thing we have to take into consideration is that we don’t know when our physical stores will reopen,” said MAC’s senior vice president of global communications, Diederik Koenders, about the decision to continue with the release. “We’re gonna be respectful and mindful of the situation that is happening, but we don’t want to take away the excitement and the joy we have been getting from all the Selena fans who are excited about this collaboration.”
The upcoming collection—titled the Selena La Reina—is inspired by the signature shimmery, sequined bustiers Selena wore in multiple iterations during performances throughout her career. The curated cosmetics selection will include four shades of lipstick ($20 each), three shades of lip gloss ($19 each), two lip pencils ($19.50 each), three matte lip shades ($23 each), an eight-pan eyeshadow palette ($35), a highlighter ($37), and a makeup bag ($35).
