George Clooney has recalled how he gave $1 million to 14 of his closest friends, who previously helped him over the years.
The actor explained how he decided to share his wealth and pay back the people who supported him during the past 35 years.
At the time, Clooney had just starred in the 2013 sci-fi thriller Gravity, which proved a huge success for him, and he wanted to share that with his close circle.
“I’ve slept on their couches when I was broke,” Clooney told GQ. “They loaned me money when I was broke.”
“They helped me when I needed help over the years. And I’ve helped them.”
“We’re all really close and I just thought, basically, if I get hit by a bus, they’re all in the will.”
To distribute the money, Clooney collected the $14 million at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles and loaded an old van marked ‘florist’ with 14 bags of cash.
He then invited his friends to his house and showed them a map of all the places and things he’s done in the world, because of their early support and generosity.
“How do you repay people like that?” He asked them all. “And I said, ‘Oh well how about a million bucks?’”
Around that time Clooney had just met his now-wife Amal, a British-Lebanese barrister. They now have two children together.
