Fashion month is guaranteed to be full of memorable moments, and if its anything like past seasons, the designs won’t be the only sights to be seen. As fabulous as the clothes are sure to be, there have also been a fair share of blunders and disasters in fashion week history. Take a look back at some of the biggest flops on the catwalks, from the laughable to downright dangerous.
- Ceiling falls at Michael Kors Show
The moment that started it all was at the Michael Kors show in 1991. While holding his show at a Midtown loft location, the ceiling collapsed mid-way through. That’s when Fern Mallis, who at that time was the executive director of the CFDA, decided it was time to properly organize the shows and thus, New York Fashion Week was born.
2. Naomi Campbell falls, hard
In 1993, legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell (iconically) fell quite hard. While walking down the runway during Vivienne Westwood’s show at Paris Fashion Week, Campbell fell and rolled her ankle thanks to a pair of blue nine-inch mock crocodile platform shoes.
3. Helmut Lang splits NYFW in two
In 1998, Helmut Lang decided to show in New York after years of showing in Paris. Not only did he switch locations, he also showed six weeks before anyone else, wanting to show before the European shows. Designers including Calvin Klein and Donna Karen followed suit, giving NYFW two seasons that year.
4. Alexander McQueen shows during a Category 4 Hurricane
In 1999, Alexander McQueen presented his show at the piers, in the midst of category 4 Hurricane Floyd. Seemingly fitting, models walked down a 100-foot-long pool.
5. Peta throws red paint
In 2000, PETA protestors make an appearance at Randolph Duke’s Show during NYFW. Missing the models, protestors threw red paint that splattered across the front row.
6. Fashion Week was cancelled
In 2001, due to the tragic terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, NYFW was cancelled mid-way through.
7. PETA throws pies at Michael Kors
In 2003, PETA came back to NYFW, this time for the Michael Kors show. Protestors threw pies made out of tofu at those seated front row.
8. PETA protester storms runway at Christian Dior
During the Dior Fall/Winter 2004 runway show, a woman holding a banner reading “Fur Shame PETA” climbed onto the runway before being quite literally dragged off by security. This model wearing a full-length fur coat walked the runway just moments later.
9. Lights out at DVF
In 2005, just as the models were making the final walk, a set of track lights fell to the floor at Diane von Furstenberg’s show. Several people were injured, causing hers to be one of the most memorable (and dangerous) shows of the season.
10. Marc Jacobs is two hours late
In 2006, Marc Jacobs’ show started two hours late. The designer was notoriously known for starting late and this time, it was because his shoes hadn’t yet arrived from Italy.
11. Kate Moss smokes a cigarette
In 2011, Moss continued to turn heads during Louis Vuitton’s show. She strutted down the runway smoking a cigarette at PFW on Non-Smoking Day.
12. Zelda Kaplan collapses front row
In 2012, Kaplan, a 95-year old New York socialite, collapsed while sitting front row of Joanna Mastroianni’s show. She was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
13. Editor slaps a PR Representative at Zac Posen
Due to a situation earlier in the evening, 60 seats were removed by the NYPD at the Zac Posen Spring/Summer 2013 runway. A group of French editors including Marie-José Susskind-Jalou and her daughters Jennifer Eymere and Vanessa Bellugeon got impatient with the delays and approached Lynn Tesoro, a PR rep from HL Group. Tempers rose as Tesoro told them that she had to seat other guests before them, and one of the women responded by slapping her. Eymere later took full credit for the smackdown and said her intent was to humiliate rather than harm Tesoro.
14. Topless protesters disrupt Paris Fashion Week
In 2013, FEMEN, a Ukrainian feminist group, disrupted PFW. Two topless protestors charged onto the runway during Nina Ricci’s show.
15. Man falls through ceiling during London Fashion Week
In 2014, a man fell through the ceiling during LFW, disrupting Fashion East’s show held at the Topshop Venue.
16. Streaker crashes Prabal Gurung runway
The Prabal Gurung Fall/Winter 2014 runway show was interrupted by Vitalli Sediuk, a former Ukranian reporter and current celebrity prankster, who knelt down on the catwalk in a black trench coat and Burger King crown before revealing his mostly nude body to the shocked audience.
17. Models faint during NYFW
In 2016, several models fainted during Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 presentation. Held outside in 85-degree weather on Roosevelt Island, the heat was just too much to bear for attendees and models alike.
18. Dipsy walks the runway
In 2017, Dipsy, from the ’90s television show Teletubbies, closed out Bobby Abley’s show during LFW. With the collection being inspired by the show, it seemed only fitting to see the life-size character strut down the runway.
