Emma Thompson will join Lashana Lynch and the cast of the new Matilda film, playing the much-feared Miss Trunchbull.
Netflix’s production will draw on both the 1996 film adaptation and the 2020 stage show Matilda the Musical, both based on the original 1988 novel by Roald Dahl, according to Variety.
It follows the well-known story of a young girl named Matilda, who has the gift of telekinesis, and who uses her power for good against her mean parents and terrifying school principal, Miss Trunchbull, who will be played by Thompson.
The lead role of Matilda will go to 11-year-old newcomer Alisha Weir, reports the Independent.
The 2020 musical’s director, Matthew Warchus, will helm the new film, while original playwright Dennis Kelly will adapt the screenplay, featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
Director Warchus described Matilda as “an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars” to the Independent.
“I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world,” he added.
