Elizabeth Debicki to play Diana in The Crown’s final two series

Elizabeth Debicki has been cast as Diana, Princess of Wales, in the final two series of The Crown. The Australian actress is best known for her roles in The Night Manager and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

She will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s anticipated new film Tenet, which is due to open in late August. Debicki replaces Emma Corrin, who makes her debut as the young princess later this year.

“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” said Debicki. “It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

Other casting announcements for the last two seasons of the hit show include Imelda Staunton, who succeeds Olivia Colman as the Queen, Leslie Manville who takes over from Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, and Jonathan Pryce who follows Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip.

The final two series will be based upon the early 2000s, although specific storylines and events that might be explored have not been disclosed. Filming for season four finished just before lockdown began, and is set amid the backdrop of the 80s and early 90s.

“The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice-president of original content. “We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”
