The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have broken Instagram records by amassing one million followers in just five hours and 45 minutes. Nearly 24 hours after the account was launched, the couple has attracted a following of 2.5 million.
The record was previously held by Korean pop star who reached the milestone in 11 hours and 36 minutes in January.
The account @sussexroyal will be used to share “work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements” offering an “opportunity to shine a light on key issues”. The first post comprised a mini gallery of photos documenting official visits made over the past year.
Kang Daniel, who joined Instagram on New Year’s Day, topped Pope Francis’ Instagram record, acquiring one million followers in 12 hours. The Duchess of Sussex closed her personal Instagram account last year, just before the royal wedding in May 2018.
The royal family published social media guidelines last month, promising to block users who post offensive comments on official channels.
