ust when you thought we’d hit peak ‘90s nostalgia, news of a new TV reboot of the 1995 classic Clueless has emerged. But don’t expect the same wholesome(ish) high school plot lines.
According to Dateline, the new show, written by the team behind Will & Grace (another ’90s classic that returned to air itself in 2017), will be a complete reimagining of the film, seemingly tailored to Generation Z. This time, the plot will centre on Dionne (originally played by Stacey Dash), rather than best friend Cher (Alicia Silverstone).
While the original was a modern take on Jane Austen’s comedic classic Emma, this reboot will be more “Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video,” according to the report, which suggests the show will focus on “what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans”.
Online, responses to the news have been mixed, with many questioning the need for a darker, grittier version of the preppy, pastel-hued original, which was more faithfully adapted for TV back in 1996. (People were similarly unimpressed with last year’s panned Heathers TV adaptation, a darker take on the already very dark 1998 teen comedy.)
As of now, the show is still being shopped around, so it’s unclear when it will air, or land on streaming services. But if the popularity of the film is anything to go by, people are sure to be watching when it does.
