A New Ruth Bader Ginsburg Documentary Will Debut Next Month

13/01/2021

Anew documentary focusing on Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life, work, and legacy is coming in February, roughly five months after the Supreme Court Justice’s death.

Arriving in virtual theaters February 12 and on demand March 9, RUTH: Justice Ginsburg in Her Own Words will recount the late icon’s career and personal triumphs with snippets from her own past interviews and appearances. It will also reenact some of her constitutional cases and include commentary from former colleagues.

“In those days, I had three strikes against me: One is I was Jewish; another, I was a woman; and then, the one that I think really did me in, was I had a four-year-old daughter,” the women’s rights pioneer says in one vintage clip in the trailer, released yesterday.

RUTH is directed by Oscar winner Freida Lee Mock, who is no stranger to documenting trailblazing women in her work. Her Academy Award–winning documentary, Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision (1994), follows the titular artist who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Mock’s 2013 film, Anita: Speaking Truth to Power, profiled Anita Hill and her experience testifying before a jury of white men about sexual harassment she endured while working with Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

Mock’s take on Justice Ginsburg won’t be the first time her story has been taken to the screen. In 2018, there was the documentary RBG, directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, which was nominated for an Oscar. The same year, there was the release of On the Basis of Sex, a biopic starring Felicity Jones as Ginsburg carving out her career as a lawyer and a young mother.
